Sedation Dentistry - Deep Sedation and General Anesthesia
Deep sedation is the final level of sedation prior to reaching general anesthesia. When very extensive treatment is required, your dentist may recommend that the treatment be performed under deep sedation/general anesthesia. Deep sedation/general anesthesia may be indicated for patients who exhibit uncontrollable anxiety, who are in need of extensive surgery, or who have difficulty controlling bodily movements. Analgesics, antianxiety agents, sedatives, and/or general anesthetic agents may be used in these situations, and typically only anesthesiologists or oral surgeons possess the training and licensure to perform deep sedation/general anesthesia.
