What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small titanium fixtures that are placed in the bone of the upper and lower jaw. They serve as man-made substitutes for the root portion of lost natural teeth, and act as an anchor for replacement teeth. Dental implants can be used to replace a single lost tooth or many missing teeth.

The image to the right shows a single implant being used to replace a missing tooth. This is considered a permanent restoration and cannot removed by the patient. Note that the crown on top of the implant is not connected to either of the adjacent teeth.

The image to the right shows two implants being used to support a three unit bridge. This is considered a permanent restoration and cannot removed by the patient. Note that the middle tooth (without an implant under it) is connected to the other two.

The image to the right shows how four implants can be used to support a lower denture. The implants are connected together with a gold bar upon which one can clip the denture. This is considered a removable restoration in that the patient can remove the denture.

Research and documented scientific studies have proven the effectiveness and long lasting results of implants. You can rely on your new teeth to look, feel and function line natural teeth for years to come.

Dental implants are appropriate for almost anyone who is missing teeth or at risk of losing teeth. Occasionally, older patients express concern that their age may prevent them from enjoying the benefits that dental implants offer.

However, health is more of a determining factor than age. If you're healthy enough to have a tooth extracted, you're probably healthy enough to receive dental implants.
