Cosmetic Dentistry - Partial and Complete Dentures
What are dentures?
Dentures are artificial substitutes used to replace all or some of the lost teeth and adjoining tissues to maintain function, health and esthetics of the tissues. In simple terms dentures help replace lost teeth.
What are the different types of dentures?
Dentures are broadly classified as partial and complete, fixed or removable. Complete dentures are used in situations when a patient is missing a complete complement of teeth while partial dentures are used in situations where the patient is missing only some of their teeth. Partial dentures can be further classified as removable and fixed. Removable partial dentures replace a few teeth and are designed to be removed and replaced by the patient. A fixed partial denture also replaces a few teeth but it can not be removed by the patient.

Newer types of dentures are gaining popularity as Dental Implants are being used to replace missing teeth. A fixed partial denture can be placed upon dental implants to replace many teeth in a fixed fashion. An implant supported fixed or removable complete denture can be used to not only replace a complete compliment of missing teeth but the denture can attach so securely that one no longer has to deal with the innate looseness of the typical complete denture. These types of dentures utilize metallic implants that are embedded into the bone and give support for artificial teeth.
