Types of Anesthetics :

Topical anesthetics are applied to gum tissue with a swab. They prevent pain on a surface level. Before injecting a local anesthetic, your dentist or hygienist may numb an area with a topical anesthetic. Topical anesthetics may also be used to help soothe painful mouth sores.

Local anesthetics work to prevent pain in the area of your mouth where treatment will occur. They are used in many dental procedures such as restoring teeth, preparing teeth for crowns or treating gum disease. Local anesthetics are injected into the gum tissue near the site that is being treated. They work by blocking nerve endings and numbing mouth tissues. They produce a temporary numbness that often is perceived as a "fat lip" feeling.
